Chang the root password

$ sudu su

#  passwd

Then the system will ask you to input your new password.

    There is no root password in Ubuntu by default, so your instructions are really for setting a root password, not changing it.

    Also, there is no need to set a root password. If you want a persistent root prompt, the sudo su or sudo -i command will suffice.
